The IOC announced today that London has been selected as the host city for the 2012 Olympic Games. London beat out 4 other cities during 4 rounds of voting which including Moscow, New York, Madrid and Paris.

It was a close race in the last round of voting between London and Paris, with London winning by just 4 votes.

London 2012 will use a combination of new sporting venues in the Olympic Park, existing world-class facilities and other inspirational and historical locations. Outside the Olympic Park, athletes will have the chance to compete in or near venues such as the World Heritage sites of Greenwich, the Palace of Westminster and the Tower of London; Wembley Stadium; Lord’s Cricket Ground; Wimbledon; Horse Guards Parade; the Royal Parks and Eton Dorney. London 2012 is committed to “Excellence without extravagance” and it is for this reason that new venues will be built only where clear legacy needs have been identified and sporting and business plans developed for post-Games use.

Equestrian events in 2012 will be held in Greenwich Park - one of four World Heritage sites in London.
