NAYRC Silver Medal Performance for Canada East Team

Julie Watchorn & QuintesseAfter the completion of the Team Dressage Championship, the Canada East Young Riders’ Team won the Team Silver Medal today at the 2004 F.E.I. North American Young Riders' Championships (NAYRC), held Tempel Farms in Old Mill Creek, IL, Aug. 11-15, 2004.

Team Canada East, comprised of Alexandra Hosein, Wellington, NS, Veronique Lavallee, St-Lazare, QC, and Julie Watchorn, Schomberg, ON, earned a total team score of 195.289. Edging the Canadians out of the Gold medal position by less than four points was USA Region 7 with a team total of 199.244. The bronze medal went to USA Region 6 with a final total of 190.978.

Watchorn and her mount Quintesse finished the Team Test in third place with a score 66.311%, Lavallee and Pryme Tyme had a score of 64.622% for eighth position, and Hosein riding Lucky Star is sitting in tenth spot with a score of 64.356%. Canada West Individual, Stephanie Koepke of Calgary, AB, and Flanero finished the Team Test in sixth place with 65.111%. All four Canadian riders have earned the right to move forward to the Individual Championship round.

The Team Silver medal for Canada shows a steady improvement for Canadian dressage as Dressage Canada continues to work with its 12-year strategic plan.   For many competitors, the NAYRC is their first experience riding on a team, as well as their first time competing under the rules of the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI). It is often the launching ground for future Olympians.

The individual dressage medal competition begins August 13th, 2004 when the individual championship tests will be ridden followed by the consolation ride on Saturday. This is the second leg of the Individual medal competition which is open to the top 25-horse/rider combinations after the Team Dressage Championships. The top 15-horse/rider combinations after the Team and Individual Championship Tests move on to the final portion of the competition, the Musical Freestyle Test, on Sunday.

The Dressage Jury at the 2004 NAYRC is headed by Jury President Gary Rockwell (USA). Rockwell is joined by Marian Cunningham Becker (USA), Janet Lee Brown (USA), Joan Macartney (CAN), Susan Rothgeb (CAN), Lorraine Stubbs (CAN), and Jane Weatherwax (USA). Jerry Schwartz (USA) is the Dressage Competition Organizer, and Linda Zang (USA) is the Foreign Technical Delegate.
