Garry Roque
Birthplace: Bermuda
Birthdate: April 14, 1960
Hometown: Caledon East, Ontario
Garry Roque recently began riding for Canada following a successful eventing career representing Bermuda. After learning to ride as an eight-year-old, Garry completed his first three day event at the 1981 North American Young Riders’ Championship.
Garry was a member of the Bermuda team at the 1990 World Equestrian Games in Stockholm, Sweden, and went on to compete at the 1991 Pan American Games where the team captured a silver medal. His partner was Casemate, an Appaloosa Canadian Sport Horse that might explain Garry's fondness for Canada.
Although he has lived in Canada since he was a teenager, Garry only obtained his Canadian citizenship in 1997 and has since been campaigning in the hopes of earning a spot on the Canadian Eventing Team. Leatherhead, the former mount of Frank Merrill, joint master of the Eglinton-Caledon Hunt, is now enjoying a career in eventing. One up-and-coming horse that Garry is especially excited about is Hakuna Matatta, a thoroughbred-Hannoverian cross that he and the owner bred themselves.
Garry was named the Ontario Leading Male Rider of the Year in 2000, 2001 and 2003.
