Jump Canada is pleased to announce that the Royal Horse Show in Toronto, ON, will host the 2002 CIBC Canadian Show Jumping Championship in November.

The CIBC Canadian Championship will consist of two classes to be held on the first Friday and Saturday of the Royal (November 8th and 9th). A $10,000 Table A speed class will kick things off on the Friday evening and a $30,000 Table A jump-off competition will decide the Champion on Saturday evening. The format will be one horse per rider and points earned over the two events will determine the Canadian Champion. In addition to the prize money earned, the highest placed Canadian rider overall receives the title of 2002 Canadian Champion and the CIBC Award of $10,000.

"As Canada’s National Championship, this is the title that every Canadian rider hopes to win," noted Chair of Jump Canada and Canadian Equestrian Team Member, Mark Samuel. "At Jump Canada, we are very happy to be able to build on our partnership with the Royal to present Canada’s premier title and we welcome CIBC as a new sponsor. CIBC is an institution built on excellence and we are proud to have them associated with our sport’s highest recognition of excellence."

This year will be the second year that the Royal has played host to the Canadian Championship. Formally held at Spruce Meadows in Calgary, AB, recent Canadian National Show Jumping Champions include: Ainsley Vince in 2001, Eric Lamaze in 2000, Beth Underhill in 1999, Mac Cone in 1998, and Mario Deslauriers in 1997.

“I can’t imagine a more exciting opportunity for a horse show than to host the finest show jumping in Canada and to witness the crowning of the Canadian Champion,” said Royal Horse Show Chairman, Kim Philip. “We at the Royal invite all Canadians to celebrate our national show jumpers and their successes. We are showcasing Canada’s best.”

Jump Canada is a committee of Equine Canada responsible for all hunter, hunter equitation and jumper activities in Canada from the grass roots to the international level. Jump Canada is governed by a board of directors, the majority of whom are elected by the stakeholders in the sport.

The Royal Horse Show is part of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, Canada’s Largest Indoor Fair, which will run from Nov 8th-17th 2002.
